Australian gaming giant Aristocrat has a large back catalogue of slots which are now available online. Big Ben is a great example of simple slot game which would have been the latest thing 15+ years ago in live casinos, though now feels simple and dated. London, or rather clichéd symbols of a London of yesteryear, is the theme. This is a bright and playable slot, as long as you are not expecting too much in the way of interesting features. Graphically, the game really does feel dated. Symbols such as the soldier in the busby hat, Big Ben itself and the Victorian gas lap are colourful, though they lack the detail you would expect from today’s online slot games. There are a few sound effects (a chiming sound, and some intro music), though most of the sounds are the standards from Aristocrat. This is a shame, as a good sound track can really make the difference for many slot games. On the positive side, this slot has an addition to the usual free spins round – in the form of the ‘Chime’ feature. This can potentially get you a win of 500x your total spin amount for the full 12 chimes.
This slot used 25 win lines, with the standard 5 reels and 3 rows of symbols. You can choose how many lines to play, with a minimum spin of 1c online (might be more at some live casinos). The max bet is $4 per line, or $100 per spin. You’ll want to see as many of the solider symbols as possible in this game. This is both the wild and the top payer. For 5 on a win line, the pay-out is 3000 coins; though keep in mind that 5 of these will usually fit in with several other winning combos at the same time. Big Ben is the scatter, paying 1000 for 5 anywhere on the reels, and also triggering the ‘chimes’ feature if you get one on reels 1 and 5 in the same spin. With 3 or more, you will trigger the free spins bonus too. The other regular win symbols start with the crown and union jack flag (800 for 5), bus (500), Phone box (300) and lamp (250). There is also a tavern sign, and playing card symbols king down to 9 which make up the smaller wins. Like on all Aristocrat slots, you’ll have the chance to gamble any wins on the flip of a playing card.

When you land a Big Ben on reels 1 and 5, the clock will start to chime. Depending on how many chimes you hear, you will win a multiplier of the total bet amount for that spin. For 1 chime your win is 2x, then 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x and so on for more chimes. The top prize for 12 chimes is 500x your spin amount – pretty good for a random bonus. Free spins are the standard Aristocrat feature, and this bonus is no different. The number of spins is high, with 15 for 3 Big Bens, 20 for 4 and 25 for 5. This can be retriggered while you play. There are no special behaviours or features during the spins themselves. Hopefully at the end of these bonuses, you’ll be hearing the familiar (if rather odd) circus music that Aristocrat uses for big wins.

This is a decidedly retro slot. It does have a fan base in live casinos, and I can see why with the mix of history and the 2 bonus features. For me it does not compare well to even the simpler of today’s online slot games. The graphics are blocky, the sounds are odd and the free spins are not different from the main game in any significant way. If you enjoy low intensity games at the higher end of the variance scale, then why not take this one for a spin. The only other reason I could see for playing is to take a look into the evolution of slots games starting 15 or so years ago when video slots were new.
